Abstract
The evolution of a breast mass is often a difficult challenge for the practicing surgeon. Though most often benign, an aggressive approach to a breast mass is warranted to ensure that an earlymalignant lesion is not overlooked.
Authors reviewed 442 cases of breast mass treated at department of general suregry, Hae Dong Hospital, between January 1992 and June 1994.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1) The most prevalent age group of breast mass was 4th decade(167/442, 37.8%), followed by 5th decade, 3rd decade.
2) The most common lesion was fibrocystic disease(252/442, 57.6%), followed by fibroadenoma, cancer.
3) The malignancy rates were 14.3%(63/442) over all, 48.9% in 6th decade, 30.0% in 7th decade, 17.9% in 5th decade.
4) The malignancy rate of the clinical and radiologic, both, benign group was 0.5%(1/190).
Further studies on the criteria of less invasive diagnostic procedure with careful follow up of breast mass are needed.
